I'm just starting to read up on HB and had a couple of questions that I want opinions on. Firstly, is it essential to have a qualified/certified practitioner take you through the process?
Second, if not what would be the best book to get me started practising HB for myself (I can pick up deeper theory later)?
Basically, I can't afford the hundreds of dollars to go to someone for HB at the moment but I would like to get started myself.

It can bring out very strong subconscious material.
You can enter catharsis. It is very sensible to have
somebody trained and grounded present.
On the other hand breathing is not harmful!
So if you do, I recommend keeping it fairly
superficial i.e. stop when discomfort shows up.

Wed, May 16, 2007 - 10:57 AMI have done breathwork on my own, however, I am a trained facilitator and have also done it with others in group more than a dozen times in the past. I agree with Mark that it would be unwise, as a "newbie" to do breathwork on your own, and that it would be better for you to find a trained facilitator to get you started. Reading up on it can prepare you, but it would quite likely be counter-productive, or even dangerous (depending on your mental / spiritual state) to try to do the practice solo. -

I remember being told the same thing about experimentation with entheogens but that turned out to be quite unfounded. In my experience with entheogens (which I realise is a different thing from HB) I've found that most people who have had problems have had them triggered by the warnings of doom and psychosis of others.
But like I say, it may be completely different for HB.
